When I started studying computer science I was in elementary school. The girls in elementary school were all nerds, and I like to throw in some nerd stuff, I laugh about it with my younger classmates, and I had some hobbies off since then at that point. I met up with my friends from college, and we started playing old-school Netrunner together. Of course I was a little intimidated at first, but by playing Netrunner I immediately knew I was playing in the real world.
But then I started to go with other girls in the class, and thought, well what the hell am I doing? I was never like that except on occasion. I had to figure out exactly how to actually think about how I was going to play Netrunner, and those were things like, “if on top? what means what am I going to play with in here because I’ve always been extremely concerned that my ass is going to drop if I play games.” At that point we would occasionally send mail to one another on campus, or talk about each other for one or two days or sometimes weeks, but as usually our conversation usually was about these games. By the end of the week I had lost a few points. So my friend and I looked up a really good method of checking our scores according to how frequently each individual player and their friends played certain games.
When I saw those numbers, obviously there was still a lot of time before we started playing, but let’s just say we immediately noticed we were playing one of the most commonly played games that everyone had ever played. We were wondering why. So, that’s when we started to start gathering information, and started talking about what the world is like for me in two weeks. From that point on we started talking about math, and we moved on, because we finally had a chance to talk about maths so I had to stop doing that for what feel like forever. It was kind of about the fun aspect of it, and how things can move from there so that we can find something to talk about for a long enough time.
All in all I knew that this was the place where I want to go to get to all the important stuff out there! Each month there was a monthly update, and it was often the first two weeks before classes started getting long, so after the first week we just constantly started trying to get some fun stuff out there, even if it was just randomly shuffling around. It’s really great to actually get to know people and see, as a person, what new things they’re learning, and to learn their story and take notes.
